Solid-state joining of aluminium on the mill you already have

FS1 brings friction stir welding of aluminium alloys to ordinary manual or CNC vertical mills and VMCs. The base material is not melted, so no shielding gas, filler material or dedicated FSW machine is needed. FS1 has no internal cooling and needs no coolant.

Catalog highlights

Three sizes, one shank

FS1 is made from annealed AISI H13 tool steel (200 HB) with a 12.7 mm (1/2") straight shank. All three sizes have a 3.3 mm pin and an overall length of 36.0 mm.

  • Size 1: FS1-100-033-025-H13HB200, SKU MF1019. Weld depth up to 3 mm, shoulder Ø 10.0 mm, pin length 2.5 mm.
  • Size 2: FS1-120-033-050-H13HB200, SKU MF1003. Weld depth up to 6 mm, shoulder Ø 12.0 mm, pin length 5.0 mm.
  • Size 3: FS1-150-033-075-H13HB200, SKU MF1020. Weld depth up to 8 mm, shoulder Ø 15.0 mm, pin length 7.5 mm.

Tool holding and machine requirements

The tool fits ER32, ER25 or similar collets, C5 and R8 collets, and end mill holders. Always install it with the shank shoulder seated against the collet or holder face. Minimum machine requirements:

  • Spindle power: 2 hp (about 1.5 kW)
  • Spindle speed: 2,000 RPM
  • Spindle torque: 25 Nm (18.4 ft-lb)
  • Machine class: a knee mill in the class of a Bridgeport Series 1, or stiffer

Illustrated setup and use guide

Step-by-step drawings show tool placement in the mill and workpiece clamping with toe clamps on a backing plate or in a machinist vise. They also cover the weld sequence (position, plunge, dwell, traverse, retract), tool tilt, five standard joint designs and safety practice. The joint designs are square butt, lap, lap-type and butt-type T-joints, and corner.

Welding data for aluminium

The catalog gives starting values for ISO N01 and N10 aluminium, based on tests in EN AW 6082. The values cover spindle speed, weld feed, plunge feed, plunge depth for each size, tilt, dwell time and rotation direction.
